Last week we woke up to the news that Israel had waged war against Iran.
In Gaza the humanitarian situation remains abysmal and Europe’s silence deafening.
Ukrainians keep suffering from the brutal Russian invasion.
All over the world conflicts escalate and no solution is in sight while war criminals enjoy impunity.
And what is Trump doing while the world is in flames?
After a week where he sent the army to repress peaceful protests in California, this weekend he is celebrated his birthday with a military parade in Washington.
A military parade for the leader’s birthday is a scene from the authoritarian playbook.
This is why more than 30 Nobel Prizes and more than 400 academics and scholars of history and democracy chose to publish an open letter to denounce the return of fascism.
The letter commemorates the centenary of the Manifesto of the Anti-Fascist Intellectuals, published in 1925, when Mussolini was solidifying his power grip on Italy.
I am part of the group of Italians that organised this letter. As Italian citizens, we feel the responsibility of this antifascist legacy. We know what fascism looks like and we know we must all act now to stop it.
As we wrote in Time Magazine last week, “When hundreds of scholars—many who have dedicated their lives to studying the fall of democracies—warn that fascism is returning, they are not being dramatic. They are being precise”

We are not bound to relive the past.
