French elections: what happens next?

Join us online on Wed 31 July to discuss the political situation with French social movement activists.

As the Olympics take place in Paris, join us on Wednesday evening to discuss what’s going on on the political scene. The Nouveau Front Populaire’s shock win in the French elections (without an absolute majority) stopped the far right in its tracks. But with parliament deadlocked and Macron refusing to name a prime minister from the left and green bloc, what happens next?

On Wednesday 31 July at 6pm UK time, join French social movement activists and researchers to discuss the situation in France and how we can mobilise to show solidarity with French progressives battling the rise of the far right. The meeting will take place online via Zoom.

We will hear from:

– Alice Picard, ATTAC France, a transnational mass membership social movement organisation mobilising against neoliberal policies, for social justice & climate.
– Anaïs Fley, France-based researcher on the rise of the far right at Transform! Europe.
– Youssef H. Trade unionist and migrants rights activist at the CGT trade union.
– Shaista Aziz (chair), journalist, campaigner and co-director of The Three Hijaabis.

Our speakers will reflect on how the NFP’s surprise win was achieved, explain the current political deadlock in France, and strategise with us on how to build on progressive successes to beat the far right in France and transnationally.
