Grant Shapps! Drop this dangerous Bill

Send this message to Grant Shapps MP, Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, and your MP:

In his opening address as Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said, “I am here because… mistakes were made. And I have been elected as leader of my party, and your prime minister, in part, to fix them.” The Prime Minister also pledged support for the 2019 Conservative Manifesto. This committed the current government to “high standards of workers’ rights, environmental protection and consumer rights”.

These goals are completely incompatible with The Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) Bill. This legislation proposes sweeping removal of the rules designed to protect us.

I am writing to urge you to withdraw this legislation.

• There is no democratic mandate for this radical programme of deregulation. This threatens a vast range of areas, including consumer rights (like late flight compensation), the protection of conservation areas, and employment and workplace rights.
• The legislation gives ministers tremendous power, without any scrutiny or oversight, to replace these old EU regulations with "British versions" (or just abolish them outright).
• The Bill will create chaos and poor governance, rather than stability. It will undermine confidence in the economy and will have a negative impact on business investment.

Although your predecessor claimed that the Bill would not undermine workers’ and environmental rights, this is not how the legislation has been drafted. Clauses 15.5 and 15.10 prevent ministers creating regulations under these powers that ‘impose a new regulatory burden’. This makes the legislation an explicitly deregulatory attack on existing standards.

Please take this opportunity to reverse course and withdraw the bill.
