Report: what happened at conference?

Another Europe has a plan and has had a lively democratic conference - read about it here.

On December 8th, around 250 people attended Another Europe is Possible’s first ever members’ conference. As well as hearing from speakers and participating in workshops, members of Another Europe voted on amendments to our strategy and established a democratic constitution for the organisation.

Another Europe has a plan – to fight for and win a referendum on Brexit, and to transform Europe. We also have a strategy for every outcome in the coming period, win or lose, referendum or not. Our campaign against Brexit is indelibly linked with a campaign against the status quo: for a society run in the interests of people and the planet, and for free movement for all.

You can view our strategy here and our constitution here. The debate was lively and good natured, with around twenty amendments submitted.

Meanwhile, workshops on immigration, understanding Lexit, and transforming Europe aimed at creating a shared understanding of the Brexit debate. The conference also facilitated spaces to plan our work in trade unions and the Labour Party, and to do work around environmentalism and the green economy.

Speakers at the conference included speakers from the IWGB union, MEP Molly Scott Cato, journalist Zoe Williams, Marina Prentoulis from Another Europe, and Green deputy leader Amelia Womack. We finished on a brilliant and rousing speech from Labour MP Lloyd Russell Moyle.

The conference elected eight members to serve on Another Europe’s national committee: Kelly Rogers, Marina Prentoulis, Ana Oppenheim, Mary Kaldor, Hilary Wainwright, Luke Cooper, Ben Towse and Nadia Whittome.

A further eight will now be elected by an online ballot of all Another Europe members, and will sit alongside representatives from our affiliated organisations – Left Unity, the Green Party of England and Wales, European Alternatives and Global Justice Now.
