Agenda
10:50 – Arrivals and Welcome
Facilitated by Another Europe National Committee and founding member Luke Cooper.
11:00-12.15 – Confronting the Brexit and Trumpist oligarchy: our vision for a democratic alternative from below
Speakers: Michael Chessum (author and activist), Laura Parker (electoral reform campaigner) and Graham Campbell (SNP Socialists), chaired by Alena Ivanova.
In this session, we’ll discuss the challenge posed by the Trump administration and the power of the new business oligarchy symbolised by the likes of Musk, who is inflaming and amplifying extreme right forces in the UK. As Starmer’s Labour and centrist politicians lean rightwards and tinker with the failing status quo, we’ll discuss how to build real grassroots democratic alternatives, from social movements and community organising to electoral reform.
12:20-13.20 – Europe beyond borders: what’s our vision for rights based migration policy?
Speakers: Zoe Gardner (campaigner), Fatma Moulay (Western Sahara human rights activist), Maritza Castillo Calle (IWGB union vice president), chaired by Seema Syeda.
The far right is ramping up its migrant hatred and the UK and EU governments are going along with it; further criminalising migration and militarising borders. In this session, we’ll discuss how we can boldly advocate for a liberatory migration politics – with free movement as a basic right, by challenging racist discourse and border policies and organising for migrants rights.
