As members of the Labour Party, we strongly agree with your statement (Sky News, Ridge, 18 Nov 2018) that the “difference between the Labour Party and the Tories is that Labour are a members-led party” and that your “mandate comes from the members”.
We also back your transformative agenda for Britain.
Our communities desperately need a new economic model after decades of decline.
Labour under your leadership has the ideas to put Britain on a new path.
But Brexit puts much of this at risk. At best it is a huge distraction from the policies we desperately need to improve our country. At worse it endangers our whole agenda.
Now - at this time of great crisis - Labour can provide the leadership the country needs to offer a different course.
Labour conference was emphatic that a people's vote must be kept on the table. Unlike previous Labour leaders you are committed to party democracy and for a new kind of politics. You have rightly respected the conference decision.
Like you we are not evangelists for the EU. We believe it needs urgent and far-reaching reform. Your agenda for ‘Remain and Reform’ was right in 2016. And it’s still the right position today.
Some 86 per cent of Labour members back a people's vote on Brexit with an option to Remain in the EU. We want the Labour leadership to now back the members on Brexit. Labour should now lead the campaign for a people's vote.
Already public opinion has shifted rapidly with 54% now backing staying inside the EU. If Labour shifted its position we are certain this would turn the polls decisively in favour of the Remain side.
But time is of the essence. We need to act now.
Please listen to the members and back a new referendum.
