Poland has been a tense sight of struggle between progressive and far-right forces. It’s a case where big social movements like the Womens’ Strike have fed into electoral success for progressive groups – but such gains feel temporary and have not yet been shored up.
Now, a Eurosceptic right winger Karol Nawrocki has narrowly won the Polish presidential election. Amongst allegations of voter fraud, Nawrocki is pro-Trump, anti-migration and likely to adopt a confrontational style of cohabitation with the incumbent liberal government, headed by Donald Tusk.
