The just-published White Paper on migration may be one of the biggest capitulations to the politics of the xenophobic far right since Brexit.
Instead of taxing extreme wealth to invest in our crumbling public services and our education system, Labour are once again attacking migrants.
Shutting the door to hugely appreciated and sorely needed care workers, raising the income thresholds to above the median national level to access a visa route and doubling the waiting time for our friends, neighbours and loved ones to have the right to settle here – those are cruel policies that hurt and fragment our society.
For decades migrants have been the scapegoat for failing governments and failing politics – the housing shortages, the hospital waiting times, the lack of vocational training won’t be solved by bogus quotas and numbers pointing down. While people are crying out for change, for decent opportunities and functioning services, the Government is serving them same old xenophobic lies.
A red version of Reform UK is not what UK voters opted for in 2024. It is not what the public wants.
